Essential Oils and How They Can Help Anxiety

Essential oils can be an amazing homeopathic means to address symptoms of depression and anxiety. While I am not a doctor and am not claiming essential oils are a cure all... it is a smart self care ritual to integrate into your life that has proven benefits. Essential oils can help you deal with or navigate patterns and experiences of anxiety and provide you peace and serenity in a time that feels riddled with chaos.

Some of the best essential oils for anxiety are: 

1. Lavender

Lavender oil is a great way to combat anxiety because of its calming and soothing effects. Lavender is a nervous system restorative and can help you sleep, combat restlessness, irritability, panic attacks, or a nervous stomach/ nervous tension. Lavender oil promotes inner peace and is a great oil to diffuse before bed, or use topically throughout the day as needed. 

If you find yourself feeling anxious, put some lavender oil in the palm of your hands, rub them together, lift your hands to your face and then gently inhale. This has been proven to reduce anxiety and stress. Try it for yourself and once you are done inhaling the oil, sit and breathe until your stress or anxiety lessens! 

2. Bergamot

Bergamot is found in Earl Grey tea and has a beautiful aroma. Bergamot oil is calming and is used to combat depression and anxiety by providing energy and clarity, while also integrating relaxing properties that can help battle insomnia. Bergamot can reduce our stress response and help us deal with stress in a better way. Using Bergamot is a natural way to reduce blood pressure and pulse rate which provides feelings of 'calming' and 'relaxing.' I think aromatherapy is the best way to use this oil: just put a couple drops into your diffuser while you're laying in bed, taking a bath, or after a long day! 

3. Chamomile

 Chamomile essential oils have similar effects to the tea. The oil has a peaceful, calming, scent that promotes inner harmony and can help decrease irritability, insomnia, overthinking, and worrying. A study done by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine shows that chamomile has anti-depressant powers and can calm anxiety symptoms. I love diffusing this one before bed... maybe even sip on some tea while you let the oil do its magic! 

4. Frankincense

Frankincense is great for treating anxiety because it has a calming and peaceful energy that promotes spiritual grounding. If you use this for aromatherapy, it can quiet your mind and even help you meditate. 

Aromatherapy is one of the best ways to combat anxiety with essential oils. When diffused into the air, essential oils heighten our sense of smell, which is intimately related to our emotional responses. 

When the scent of an essential oil is inhaled, molecules enter the nasal cavities and stimulate a firing of mental response in the brain. These stimulants regulate stress or calming responses, such as heart rate, breathing patterns, production of hormones and blood pressure. Aromatherapy can be obtained by using it in a bath, as direct inhalations, hot water vapor, vaporizer or humidifier, fan, vent, perfume, cologne, or — one of my favorites — through aromatherapy diffusers!! 

One of my favorite things to do to deal with anxiety is use a lavender rub on my neck! It is so easy to make.. just combine coconut oil with a couple drops of lavender oil in your palm and rub on your neck for an instant calming sensation. You can also rub this onto the bottom of your feet before bed to promote relaxation while you sleep.
