What, How, and Why: Everything You Need to Know About Essential Oils!


There is an overwhelming amount of information out there… how do you know which natural solutions and essential oils are right for you or what their benefits truly are? It is enough to get my mind spinning, but it is also something I am passionate about integrating into my daily life. This is why I have compiled a sort of ‘how to’ guide to essential oils for all of you!

Essential oils have been around for thousands of years and yet after all this time it seems as though they are still shrouded in mystery. With so many different types of oils out there it can feel intimidating trying to navigate that world to find the one that suits you best. I like to have scientific data from medical professionals to truly know and believe what I am bringing into my body and home are healthy and pure. I want to ensure I have the best, most accurate, and up to date information... always! I have been a consumer of essential oil for years, but having a baby around has heightened my awareness and need to only use trustable and pure brands. So, I have talked with experts and have compiled a ton of research to bring you the only snapshot and guide you need!




So first, what are essential oils?

Essential oils are the aromatic, natural chemical compounds extracted from various parts of a plant: leaves, flowers, stems, roots, bark, etc. They are in such a potent form that a single drop of essential oil can equal multiple teaspoons of the dried herb (for instance, 1 drop of peppermint oil equals more than 25 cups of peppermint tea and oils can be up to 70x more potent than their dried herbal form). When it comes to essential oils, less is more.


How are they used?

You can use essential oils aromatically, and topically, as well as internally (depending on the brand, the oil, and the results you're seeking). You can use them to impact the limbic system and thus your emotions, for natural cleaning and deodorizing, to support health and wellness efforts, and even as a natural alternative to perfume. Some of my favorite ways to use essential oils is through my diffuser for aromatherapy, topically for meditation, and in the bath to soothe sore muscles and encourage deep relaxation.

There are a couple essential tips when dealing with essential oils: When you're looking at the many uses of essential oils I would encourage you to look for the body systems you're wishing to nurture or support, and the oils that work with that system. Reflexology is powerful and if you research the system you are trying to heal and the oils that support that, you will experience tremendous results. Essential oils have a deep impact on our minds and emotions and choosing oils with intention can impact our life in magical ways. My advice… start small, seek guidance, and scientific resources, and feel empowered to learn as you go. If you have a local apothecary store, try and take a class to learn how to integrate oils into every level of your daily life.

The remarkable benefits of essential oils can only truly be capitalized upon when the oil is pure and therapeutic grade. Quality regulations at this point are basically non-existent. There is a company who has created a “certification” to “certify its own oils” but there aren’t any industry wide ceretifixationa. It is absolutely crucial to where your oils are coming from. In order to do so simply ensure you are buying “therapeutic grade.”  Avoid the cheap oils at the grocery store, they are not. With oils, you get what you pay for. 


Why should I integrate essential oils into my life?

More and more research is coming out that supports the use of essential oils. Doctors, hospitals, and healthcare providers are now promoting it as a natural means to help patients meet their health goals and nature their bodies without negative side effects. Essential oils can act as a supplemental “medicine” for all things in your daily life: headaches, stress, digestion, aches and pains, and insomnia! Try integrating these miraculous tinctures into your routine slowly and watch your life change!
