Superfoods: What to Eat for Radiant Skin
No amount of skin cream in the world can fix a poor diet, and while we can't eat perfect all the time, there are certain superfoods you can integrate into your daily routine to help keep your skin healthy and vibrant!
Our skin is often a direct reflection of what we're eating, and I can tell you one thing for sure: eating for your skin has never tased so good!
Here are the top 8 foods you should be eating everyday if you want flawless and radiant skin:
1. Sweet Potatoes:
Sweet potatoes are packed with beta- carotene which helps to revitalize skin and give you a more even and healthy skin tone. Their beautiful orange color reflects their nutritional density. You can roast these and eat them for dinner, throw them in a salad, or cut it thin and turn it into toast for breakfast (sounds weird- but I dare you to try it. Seriously, so yummy!)
Almonds are packed with vitamin E and help heal your skin from the inside out. Almonds help your skin fight inflammation, treat wrinkles, and can even moisturize dry skin! They make a great on the go snack, topping for yogurt, or you can mix them in with roasted Brussels Sprouts!
3. Chia Seeds:
Chia seeds are incredible. They are full of omega 3 and omega 6 fats that help fight and heal skin inflammation. These fats are essential to a healthy body, yet our body can't produce them so we have to get them from an outside source! You can whip up chia seed pudding, throw it into oatmeal, onto a salad, or blend it into a smoothie. Whatever you do, try and integrate a healthy amount of chia into your diet, you won't be disappointed!
Speaking of oatmeal... this powerful fibre works wonders for the skin! Whole grain, steel cut oats are full of powerful natural vitamins and is digested slowly, helping to keep blood sugar levels stable in the body. The more stable our blood sugar levels are, the more we can keep our pores unclogged and happy. Plus, who doesn't love a good bowl of oatmeal for breakfast?
Beans, and most specifically chick peas, are full of protein and fibre, which helps to keep blood sugar levels stable. Beans are also high in zinc, which can fight off bacteria that is harmful to skin cells, and also has powerful healing qualities for existing blemishes or uneven skin. For anyone reading that is plant based, chick peas are a great way to get a protein without eating anything processed!
This one is great to know before summer arrives, a season where sun can damage our skin easily if we aren't careful! Tomatoes are super high in lycopene, an antioxidant which helps protect the fruit from the sun, and can in turn help us fight sun damage and redness caused by a day in the sun!
Eggs are loaded with the antioxidant selenium, which is one of the most powerful ways to combat sun damage, age spots, or skin cancer scars. Fish such as salmon or certain nuts such as brazil nuts or walnuts have the same antioxidant and can offer you the same benefits if you choose not to eat eggs!
Okay, I know this is not a superfood but if we are talking about skin we HAVE to talk about water. Beautiful skin needs hydration: it's as simple as that. The best way to do this is by drinking plently of water throughout the day. My favorite thing to do is squeeze fresh lemon into my water bottle during the day! It tastes amazing, is refreshing, and keeps me reaching for the water bottle all day long!
Our skin is the largest organ on our body-- it is so important to take care of it! I encourage you to try eating one of more of these foods everyday to keep your skin healthy and glowing all year long!
